What People Are Saying

Five black stars.

I’ve had a great experience using 349 climate-controlled storage unit. From the start, the facility was clean, secure, and easy to access. The temperature and humidity are well-regulated, which gave me peace of mind knowing my belongings—especially electronics, documents, and furniture—were protected from this extreme Florida weather and moisture.

Helpful hacks for an easy storage move-in!

Using storage units is a great option for anyone who requires additional space to store their belongings. However, disorganized, and cluttered storage units can make it challenging to locate specific items. Thus, proper planning and organization are necessary to maximize storage units' functionality. In this article, we will present essential tips for selecting an appropriate unit size, packing, and organizing belongings to ensure efficient use of space. Whether you are new to self-storage or a storage guru, these tips will help keep your storage unit organized and your stuff in great condition.

  • Take a Detailed Inventory

Before you begin packing your belongings into containers it is a good idea to first ensure all your items are clean and take an inventory of all your items so you know exactly what you are storing and where you have placed it in the storage unit. This will also help you plan out the best way to store your items in the storage unit. Disassemble any large furniture before you go to the facility to save time unloading and packing your unit, this will also help prevent damage and save room for more items.

  • Label, Label, Label

It may be obvious to some, but labeling every box is crucial when storing in a storage unit. Labeling the boxes that you are storing helps you remember exactly what is inside. This allows you to not spend a lot of time rummaging through all the boxes in your storage unit for that one item you are looking for. It also helps you to strategically place your boxes based on weight and importance so that you have easy access to your items.

  • Pack Strategically

Before getting to the facility, it is important to organize your items based on weight and importance. You will want to keep the more important items you plan on taking in and out towards the front of unit instead of deep in the back corner. Heavier items should be stored on the bottom to prevent damaging lighter more fragile items and falling over to cause injury. Making an aisle from the front to back to ensure easy access to items stored in the back.

  • Disassemble Furniture and Store Upright

Disassemble any large furniture before you go to the facility to save time unloading and packing your unit, this will also help prevent damage and save room for more items. Be sure to store these items in a vertical position and towards the back of the storage unit to maximize space. For storing a mattress, it is best to store it flat so that the mattress padding does not shift after being stored for a long period of time.

  • Stack Vertically

To maximize the capacity of your storage unit, remember to stack your items vertically. Take advantage of the height of the storage unit, as well as the length and width. There can be a lot of storage potential that can be used by stacking boxes and furniture vertically. If the unit has a particularly high ceiling, consider getting a small ladder or step stool to store inside your unit along with your other items to ensure easy access to lighter items you have stored at the top.

  • Prevent Pests and Moisture

Do not store any perishable or food items to ensure not to attract any pests. Using dryer sheets or using a mint extract will help deter any pests from entering your storage unit. Reapplying them every 30 days is essential (they don’t like any strong fragrances). Placing your items on raised pallets and free-standing shelving units will also prevent them from making a home underneath your boxes and prevent moisture damage to your boxes. Avoid using plastic bags to store your items because they are thin and can lock in moisture which can lead to mold.

Pack it up, we'll keep it safe.
